GAMBYONG DANCE
Dancer : Didik Nini Thowok
Duration : 14’:00”

This is a dance originating from Surakarta in Central Java, to celebrate the Tayuban fertility ritual. In the Tayuban dance ritual, the female dancer is a symbol of the earth and the male dancer is a symbol of the seed. The dance dates back to the 1920s and depicts a young woman who is celebrating her beauty. Wearing a green costume showing off her shoulders and intricate brown batik, Didik's supple movements and proper coquettishness reflects the refined palace version of a dance originally taken from Tayub folk tradition.
